BULLET Two Hundred Years of St. Louis Places of Worship - 1770 - 1970
St. Louis Public Library staff presents Two Hundred Years of St. Louis Places of Worship (1770-1970). This directory includes information about churches, synagogues, missions, temples, and other places of worship in the City of St. Louis Missouri between 1770-1970. The directory uses the boundaries of 1876 to define the City of St. Louis.

Listings for places of worship in St. Louis County or its independent municipalities are not included. If a place of worship moved outside the City of St. Louis, information following the relocation is not included.

The directory may be searched by the name, by the denomination or by the street.

Resources used to create this directory include:

  • St. Louis Public Library vertical file and book materials
  • St. Louis Star newspaper articles (published 1932-1935)
  • St. Louis City Directory (1861-1970 searched at 5 year intervals)

Each place of worship entry contains (when available):

  • Name – Name is indicated in capital letters
  • Ethnicity – Information about original congregation is indicated in parentheses
  • Denomination — Information about denominations is indicated in brackets
  • Start date -- When ‘pre’ appears, the origin is likely to be within a few years of the noted date
  • Dissolution date -- Follows start date if applicable
  • Last date – Appearing in brackets denotes the last time any record was found for that place of worship in sources checked
  • History – When available, additional information including names of early ministers, address changes or cemeteries is provided.

NOTE: A few denominations did not give individual names to their place of worship. The directory indicates these by a general name and various addresses, but does not attempt to make connections for the same church that may have simply moved to a new location.
