The Library salutes St. Louis' pioneering aviator and educator, Adela Riek Scharr.

Mrs. Scharr was the first woman licensed to fly commercially in St. Louis and one of the first women to serve as a pilot with the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS).

In 1990, Mrs. Scharr established the Adela Riek Scharr Endowment at the St. Louis Public Library.
