REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS pre 1920
Their history dates back to the early days of St. Louis when five Mormon missionaries first came to town in 1831. First stake (church) established in 1854 by Erastus Snow in former Methodist Church at 4th and Washington, where the Missouri Athletic Club stands today. In 1857 due to political difficulties most members moved to Utah. The church went into a decline after the Civil War and did not sufficiently revive until 1916, when a church was purchased on Maple Avenue. Broadway Hall, 1310 Broadway, 1875. 1302 N. Broadway in 1880 & 5731 Manchester Rd near Pearce Ave in 1885, Elliot Ave. near Benton by 1895. In 1896 the church was revived when two missionaries were sent back to St. Louis. First meetings were held at 4265 Easton Ave.. In 1916, they bought an old church at 5195 Maple Ave. Until 1949 they worshipped in various buildings in different parts of the city. Church at 4720 Jamieson Ave. (at Devonshire) was dedicated Sept. 4, 1949. Aka CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS.
