BULLET Weapons Issued to Missouri Union Militia Organizations by the Missouri Quartermaster General, 1862-1865
The annual reports of the Missouri Quartermaster General during the Civil War include information about weapons furnished to and returned by Missouri Union militia units (although this summary does not account for all weapons issued by or returned to the Missouri Quartermaster General). Such information should prove useful to genealogists and historians researching Missouri Union militia organizations.

The following sources in the collection of St. Louis Public Library were consulted in preparation of this report:

Each report includes for some Missouri Union militia organizations a list of small arms furnished to or turned in by one or more companies of the organization during the past year. It occasionally includes other information.

This report is arranged by militia unit (units with numeric designations are listed first in ascending order, units with alpha designations second in alphabetical order). Each listing provides the following information:

  • Name of militia unit
  • The type and number of weapons issued by or returned to the Missouri Quartermaster General.
  • In parentheses reference to the appropriate volume of the Missouri Quartermaster’s Annual report. For example, (MoQMG65: 148-149) refers to the Annual report for 1865, pages 148-149.

Weapons returned to the Missouri Quartermaster General in 1865 by various unspecified Missouri militia organizations (MoQMG65- 148-149) included, but were not necessarily limited to, the following items:

Following is a list of weapons issued to specific Enrolled Missouri Militia and Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia units by the Missouri Quartermaster General during the period 1862-1865 and returned by them during the period February 28- December 31, 1865.

2nd Battery Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 150 short (24-inch barrel) Enfield rifles (.577 caliber) during the last quarter of 1862 (MoQMG62- xxxii).

2nd Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in 66 Burnside carbines (.54 caliber) and 75 bayonets (type unspecified) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

2nd Regiment Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia, Company D, turned in 76 Enfield muskets (.58 caliber) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

4th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in two U.S. muskets (.58 caliber), two Austrian muskets (.58 caliber), 95 U.S. muskets (.69 caliber), and 96 bayonets (type unspecified) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

5th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 24 "muskets" (type and caliber unspecified) during the first quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxi).

5th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 80 "muskets-complete" (meaning musket issued with bayonet- type and caliber unspecified) during the second quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxxix).

6th Mounted Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 250 double-barreled shotguns (type and gauge unspecified) during the last quarter of 1862 (MoQMG62-xxxii).

7th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 800 long (39-inch barrel) Enfield rifles (.577 caliber) during the last quarter of 1862 (MoQMG62-xxxii).

17th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 100 "Austrian rifles" (caliber unspecified) during the last quarter of 1862 (MoQMG62-xxxii).

19th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 100 "muskets-complete" (type and caliber unspecified) during the second quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxi).

27th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in 22 U.S. musketoons (another name for short-barreled rifle-muskets issued to cavalrymen, usually .577 or .58 caliber) and 19 bayonets during 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

28th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 94 "muskets-complete" (type and caliber unspecified) during the second quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxxix).

32nd Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 299 "muskets-complete" (type and caliber unspecified) during the second quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxxix).

69th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia (Company D) turned in 50 Prussian muskets (.72 caliber) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

72nd Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 167 short (24-inch barrel) Enfield rifles (.577 caliber), 54 holster pistols (type & caliber unspecified), and 29 Colt revolvers (.44 caliber) during the second quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxxix).

77th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in 8 Austrian muskets (.58 caliber), 49 U.S. muskets (.69 caliber), 1 Sharps rifle (.52 caliber), 316 Garibaldi rifles (caliber unspecified), and 194 Garibaldi sabre bayonets in 1865 (MoQMG65-148-149).

80 Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in one U.S. musket (.69 caliber) and one bayonet (type unspecified) (MoQMG65- 148-149).

85th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in 15 U.S. muskets (.69 caliber) and 17 bayonets (type unspecified) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

Callaway County Company Enrolled Missouri Militia was issued 50 Colt revolvers (.44 caliber) during the first quarter of 1863 (MoQMG63-lxi).

Cooper and Moniteau Counties Company Missouri Militia turned in 82 U.S. musketoons and 19 Colt Navy revolvers (.36 caliber) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

Frazer's Company of Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia turned in 70 double-barreled shotguns (type and gauge unspecified) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

Osage and Maries Counties Mounted Company Missouri Militia turned in 39 Cosmopolitan carbines (.52 caliber) and 20 breech-loading carbines (type and caliber unspecified) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).

Pulaski and Texas Counties Mounted Company Missouri Militia turned in 70 Burnside carbines (.54 caliber) and 67 Remington revolvers (.44 caliber) in 1865 (MoQMG65- 148-149).
