BULLET IRAD (Illinois Regional Archives Depository) County Record Files Which Pertain Specifically to Civil War Soldiers
St. Louis Public Library reference librarians receive many questions from library users who are researching ancestors who were Civil War soldiers from the state of Illinois. While we have many materials in our collection which can be of help to persons researching Illinois soldier ancestors, we believe that the following list of county record files in Illinois Regional Archives Depository libraries (IRAD) which pertain specifically to Illinois Civil War soldiers will also prove helpful to persons researching such ancestors. Other records and indexes to records in the IRAD system (especially naturalizations, tax lists, probate and will records, and property records) which are not specifically Civil War soldier lists also often include listings for Civil War soldiers who resided in that county before and after the war.

The IRAD system consists of seven depository libraries where county genealogical records of long-term value have been deposited. Each depository library holds various records of the 14-23 counties in its region, except the depository at Northeast Illinois University, which holds records for Cook County and the city of Chicago only. Each depository holds a wide variety of records, including vital records, land and marriage records, naturalization records, and other, miscellaneous records. There is an IRAD Local Governmental Records Database online, and a comparable guide to IRAD depository record holdings in book form. You will find more information on the Illinois State Archives and the IRAD system, and will be able to access the Local Governmental Records Database at this URL:

http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/archives.html

Researchers are welcome to visit IRAD facilities in person, or to contact them by telephone or by mail (they currently cannot accept e-mail requests). IRAD depository libraries are closed Saturdays and Sundays, state holidays, and when the universities at which they are located are between class sessions. If you plan to visit an IRAD depository, phone ahead to confirm days and hours of operation.

The following listings include the name of the record set, the span of years covered by that set, and a three or four-letter code which identifies the IRAD depository library which holds a copy of that record set:
