Nikki Grimes received the Scharr Medallion in 2003 as part of the St. Louis Public Library's Aviation History Month activities. She was honored for her book, Talkin' About Bessie: The Story of Aviator Elizabeth Coleman, which uses poetry to humanize the first African-American aviator. This book received an Author Honor in 2003 from the Coretta Scott King Task Force. |
