Walgreens Expressions Challenge

WHEREAS, our city and nation's future depends on the health and integrity of young people across the region who will be our leaders of tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, to promote healthy responsible decisions by our youth, the Walgreens Company has established the Walgreens Expressions Challenge; and

WHEREAS, the Walgreens Expressions Challenge is a contest established for high school teenagers, ages 14 to 18 to engage in conversation about healthy choices for their future through creative expression; and

WHEREAS, teens still face many challenges when it comes to having open, productive conversations about sexual health with their parents, teachers and other adult figures in their lives. Open and healthy conversations are still very much needed for teens for effective change; and

WHEREAS, the Expressions Challenge motivates teens to voice their opinions on topics including 'self-esteem', 'teen pregnancy', 'STD awareness and prevention', 'abstinence' and "sexual responsibility"; and

WHEREAS, in the six years the Walgreens Expressions Challenge has been held in St. Louis and Chicago the 'Challenge' has reached more than 500,000 teens; and

WHEREAS, the "Challenge" has awarded over $70,000 in cash and prizes to winners, entrants, teachers, schools and organizations.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Aldermen of the City of St. Louis that we pause in our deliberations to recognize and praise the teens who participate in the Walgreens Expressions Challenge. Also we recognize the important contribution Walgreens and the Walgreens Expressions Challenge continues to make in the development of our youth. We further direct the Clerk of this Board to spread a copy of this Resolution across the minutes of these proceedings and to prepare a commemorative copy to the end that it may be presented to our honoree at a time and place deemed appropriate by the Sponsor.
