| Resolutions adopted during the 2009 session by the St. Louis City

WHEREAS, African American History Month was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, whose parents were held as slaves, and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1926 and was designed to tell a fuller picture of history that includes the contributions and achievements of African Americans usually left out of the mainstream history books; and
WHEREAS, African American History month was originally founded to be the second week of February and at its inception was named Negro History Week and was expanded to a month with a name change to African American History Month during a convention of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and Culture in the 1970s with the association also changing its name, at that time, to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History; and
WHEREAS, in the spirit of African American History Month the St. Louis Aldermanic African American Caucus recognizes the achievements and contributions of local African Americans to continue the effort of presenting a fuller and enriched picture of history and diversity in the St. Louis community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jean-Alfred Thomas, Sr. has served the city of St. Louis for nearly 30 years as a private and solo practitioner of obstetrics and gynecology at Women's Health Ob/Gyn of St. Louis, Inc. He is one of the medical pioneers that introduced the laparoscopic hysterectomy technique to St. Louis; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas did his internship and residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital and was chief residency at St. Louis University Hospital School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas is the president of the St. Louis Chapter of the Association of Haitian Physician Abroad, member of the advisory Board of the Mound City Medical Forum, National Medical Association, Missouri Medical Association, American Association of Laparoscopy in Gynecology and is an Associate Professor and Assistant Clinical Professor of OB/Gyn at St. Louis University of Medicine and Washington University-Barnes-Jewish Hospital, respectively; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas is the recipient of the St. Louis American Foundation's Salute to Excellence in Healthcare award, Teacher of the Year by the OB/GYN Residents of St. Louis University, the St. Louis Argus' "Father of the Year 2009" award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas is a founding member of the St. Louis Morehouse Parent Association. He is the husband of Mary and the father of Dr. Jean II, Pascale (Lawyer) and Bryant (Corporate).
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Aldermen of the City of St. Louis that we pause in our deliberations to recognize the many achievements of Dr. Jean-Alfred Thomas, Sr. and we direct the Clerk of this Board to spread a copy of this Resolution across the minutes of these proceedings and to prepare a commemorative copy to the end that it may be presented to our honoree at a time and place deemed appropriate by the Sponsor.
