12.40.010 Established--Personnel.

There is created a section of social service and investigation under the hospital division of the department of public welfare. This section shall consist of a supervisor of social service and investigation, ten social service workers and investigators, and one stenographer. The number of social service workers and investigators may be augmented by and with the consent of the board of estimate and apportionment.

12.40.020 Purposes--Duties.

This section shall:

A. Aid the administration of the various institutions under the hospital division by giving recommendations concerning the financial ability and residential eligibility of patients applying for treatment;

B. Help to make medical treatment more effective by adjusting the relations between a patient and his environment, thereby reducing the number of reentries;

C. Gather and report to the physicians of such institutions such pertinent facts regarding the patients as will aid in diagnosis and treatment;

D. Assist the institutions by conducting a follow-up service to insure the carrying out of medical instructions;

E. Convey to interested social agencies within the community the physician's recommendations concerning patients;

F. Promote health education and health conservation in the community through appropriate means;

G. Conduct such medical social research as will contribute further knowledge concerning the causes and prevention of disease and the promotion of health;

H. Make other recommendations and investigations and take other action calculated to contribute to the promotion of health and prevention of disease and poverty in the community.

12.40.030 Supervisor of social service.

The supervisor of social service and investigation shall have, under the direction of the hospital commissioner, control of the social service and investigation work of all the hospitals and other institutions of the hospital division.
