St. Louis

The Library houses materials on African-American heritage and achievments at each of its locations. A special collection of books, manuscripts, posters and artifacts about African-American history and culture, the Julia Davis Collection, is housed at the Julia Davis Branch.

The Library has collected genealogical sources with special emphasis on St. Louis, Missouri, and Illinois since 1902. This collection includes resource guides, census records (including the 1930 Census for Missouri and Illinois), immigration and passenger lists, military records, records of marriages, wills, and land ownership. Family histories and heraldry are also represented. Much of this information is on microfilm. Check in the History and Genealogy Department (Central Library) for these resources.

The Steedman Collection, located in the Fine Arts Department (Central Library) , contains rare books on architecture, and was established for use by architects and the students of architecture researching styles and trends. Staff of the Fine Arts Department provides assistance in the use of this collection.

The Library has been a Federal Documents Depository since 1866. Approximately 75% of all U.S. publications are available for review in the Government Information Department (Central Library). The collection strengths include information on legislation, census, and statistics.

The Library receives publications of Missouri state agencies that are intended for public use.

The Library has been designated as the official depository for all printed reports, documents, ordinances, business licenses, personnel policies, revenue collection, and publications of the City of St. Louis.

The Library provides links to all types of Government Information available on the Internet.

The Library's map collection, housed in the History and Genealogy Department (Central Library), began over 125 years ago. Today the growing collection includes over 115,000 topographic, exploration, travel, military, and a wide-range of thematic maps. Collection strengths include U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps, maps relating to St. Louis City/County, urban and tourist maps covering all areas of the world, and an electronic atlas of St. Louis City/County.
